JAMIE KIERNAN O’BRIEN

is a filmmaker based in New York City. She is currently an M.F.A. candidate at New York University’s Graduate Film program.

Born and raised in Washington, D.C., she began her career acting in theater in her hometown before moving to New York and shifting toward behind-the-camera work in film and photography. She received her B.A. in English Literature from New York University.

She loves highly stylized work that plays with and subverts genre, having worked in horror, screwball comedy, and melodrama. Her debut short film, an adaptation of The Yellow Wallpaper (in which she also stars), has won several awards in the festival circuit and premiered at TRANSlations Film Festival in Seattle in 2022.

She recently won the award for Best Director (Female) and the Outstanding Achievement Award for Best Adapted Screenplay at Indie Short Fest and the Silver Award for Best Director (Female) at the Independent Shorts Awards for The Yellow Wallpaper.

Shooting on 35mm film, she has photographed promotional campaigns for musicians, comedians, and film/TV, as well as concert and set photography. Her work as a photographer is mostly inspired by Bill Bernstein, Mick Rock, Meryl Meisler, and Robert Mapplethorpe.

She is an openly trans woman.
